A team from Boston University, UC Berkeley, and Northwestern University has developed an integrated system that combines electronic, photonic, and quantum components into a single chip. According to a new study published in Nature Electronics, this is the first device of its kind in the field of quantum computing. The team’s work introduces a method for mass-producing “quantum light factories” using the same semiconductor fabrication processes employed in conventional electronic devices.

This new chip integrates quantum light sources and electronic controllers using a standard 45-nanometer manufacturing process. This approach paves the way for large-scale production of quantum systems for computing, communication, and sensing — fields that have traditionally relied on hand-built devices confined to laboratory environments.
