The Microelectronics Observatory

is a strategic tool dedicated to mapping and disseminating the microelectronics sector in Portugal.

Created with the goal of consolidating and promoting the national industry, the observatory seeks not only to provide visibility to the technical and scientific competencies developed in the country but also to strengthen the foundations for effective collaboration among the main stakeholders in the sector. This project aims to position Portugal as a reference hub in the development of technological solutions and to place it on the global map of this sector, demystifying concepts and providing visibility to the real landscape of the sector in our country.

One of the main value propositions of the Observatory is the fact that it gathers detailed information about the entire value chain of microelectronics, from the design and development of semiconductors to the production and commercialization of electronic components, as well as a vast array of essential data to understand and assess the sector in Portugal. The platform offers a complete view of the technical capabilities and specializations of each entity, including companies, universities, research centres, and government institutions. Additionally, the Observatory provides information about academic and professional training offerings, identifying the skills and qualifications necessary for the development of the workforce in this area.
By promoting a centralized platform for consultation and interaction, the Observatory seeks to facilitate cooperation among the various players in the ecosystem, encouraging the sharing of knowledge and resources. This collaboration has the potential to create synergies that can drive innovation and technology transfer, allowing new solutions to be developed and implemented more quickly and effectively. Through this interaction, companies and research centres can identify strategic partners and opportunities for project realization that might not have been visible before, fostering a collaborative environment.

Another essential goal of the Microelectronics Observatory is to attract partnerships and business from abroad to Portugal. By highlighting the country as a competitive and avant-garde destination in the microelectronics sector, the Observatory aims to act as a bridge for international players interested in exploring the potential of the Portuguese market. Strengthening the technological and industrial ecosystem in microelectronics not only helps diversify the Portuguese economy but also creates opportunities for qualified employment and increases the country’s production and innovation capacity.
The Observatory also plays an important role in raising awareness among authorities and in shaping public policies favourable to the microelectronics sector. By gathering data about the industry and the needs of stakeholders, the platform can provide valuable insights that underpin the creation of incentives and support programs that boost the sector. With appropriate policies and strategic investments, Portugal can consolidate itself as a European player in microelectronics, positioning itself in areas such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and industrial automation, among many others.

In summary,

the Microelectronics Observatory in Portugal represents a milestone in the development of the country’s technological industry. Through the promotion of collaboration between companies and educational and research institutions, the attraction of visibility from abroad, and the support of public policies, the Observatory seeks to play an active role in building a competitive and sustainable microelectronics sector ecosystem. This collective effort strengthens the competitiveness of the national industry and propels Portugal towards a technological future.
